Michelia figo - Banana Shrub - Air Layer Plant

$45.00

A Magnolia relative which makes a flower that smells very strongly of old-fashioned banana taffy!

A lovely and hardy species with nice ornamental look, deep green leaves and coppery stems! Cold hardy to the upper 20sF.

This flower is extra potent! It smells just like banana taffy, very strongly in the early afternoon though the evening. The scent is so heady and sweet that it is hard to resist - even if you aren’t a big fan of banana!

It can flower at small sizes and be kept in container for a long time and pruned back is desired. Will become a small tree in time if grounded.

It is sometimes called the ‘Banana Magnolia’ though it is actually in the Michelia genus along with Champaca. The main notable difference between Magnolia genus are that Magnolia has flowers at the end of the stem, while Michelia has them alternating between leaves toward the end of the stems.
