Garcinia hombroniana - Seashore Mangosteen Seedling Plant
The beautiful, salt-tolerant tart mangosteen that tastes like a floral sour watermelon candy!
This species produces a red fruit with a hard shell that has a yellowy-semi-translucent flesh with many segments. The flavor is tart with very pleasant aromatic and tropical perfume notes, and an overall reminiscence to an acidic banana and sour watermelon candy! The larger fruits contain more seeds, while smaller fruits actually have more seedless segments from our experience.
The fruits keep and ripen quite well after picking as long as the shell is intact, and go from a light brick red to a dark rich crimson red with time and gain a notably higher degree of sweetness, but while still remaining fairly tart. This fruit makes excellent drinks! It also pairs wonderfully with miracle berry! One of our favorite Garcinia fruits and a must-have for those who love tart fruits!
It is a small to medium sized tree maxing out at about 20-30 feet tall with age, with signifiant width. It is highly salt-tolerant, being suitable for seaside plantings and despite the internet saying it can’t survive below 40F, we have found it to tolerate temps into the to the mid to low 30sF if moderately protected from wind exposure.
