Annona montana - Mountain Soursop

$22.00

One of the most cold hardy of all the Annona species, tolerating the upper 20sF! Fruits have thin skin and a pineapple banana flavor and similar strong scent. Highly medicinal!

Fruits are around the size of a large grapefruit and yellow when ripe. They are also very aromatic and can perfume and entire room with a delightful pineapple banana scent. The taste is similar to the scent and while most reports state that it is not very palatable, we actually find it quite enjoyable. The thin skin can be bitten right into, or scooped into with a spoon, and there is a layer of grainy sugar-like granules on the interior of the skin. The core of the fruit is fibrous however and it is only this outer layer that is eaten.

As with its close relative, soursop, this plant is valued as a cancer -fighting medicine, the leaves are employed in the same fashion as soursop to brew an anti-mutagenic tea. The leaves of this species are said to be more potent than those of the soursop.

This is also our graft stock species of choice, and is compatible with scions of many of the diverse and rare Annonas we have attempted to propagate vie grafting. Reports of Rollinia deliciosa being grafted to this species have shown an increase in fruit productivity and likely increased cold tolerance. This is an evergreen species which does not go dormant as other species do.
